Professor of Stratigraphic Geology and Sedimentology, he has carried out research campaigns mainly in the Northern Apennines and abroad, such as in Antarctica (participation in PNRA expeditions), Tasmania, Greece, Turkey, Ethiopia and Corsica. He has to his credit many national and international research projects as a participant and as scientific manager, among the main ones concerning the geological cartography of the CARG Project and sedimentological-stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental-paleoclimatic studies on Antarctic sedimentary successions.
Member of the Governing Council of the Centre of Geotechnology-University of Siena and Member of the Scientific and Programming.
