The DSFTA is committed to transferring the results of scientific research to the public, promoting technological innovation, and addressing societal demands on issues such as sustainability, the circular economy, and environmental protection. It organizes thematic meetings and educational/dissemination activities aimed at schools, universities, professionals, companies, and the general public. These meetings and activities aim to establish an ongoing relationship with society and to strengthen ties with businesses and institutions.
A significant tool for documenting the Department's commitment to outreach is the platform that the University has dedicated to collecting all Third Mission initiatives, to which the Department contributes very substantially. For instance, during the 2022-2024 triennium, roughly 350 activities were conducted, including scientific outreach, initiatives engaging citizens and schools in research, cultural events for public benefit, and efforts linked to the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A portion of these activities also enhanced the Bright Night – European Researchers' Night program, an event in which the Department has consistently participated, traditionally involving the public through hands-on experiences.
The Department also hosts three Museums (Museum of Earth Sciences, Collections of Physics Instruments, Astronomical Observatory) which, independently or in coordination, offer their extensive contribution to outreach and educational initiatives also aimed at schools of all levels. The Astronomical Observatory, in particular, carries out research activities and has a strong appeal to the public and schools. Communication also relies on Facebook and Instagram pages.
