Degree in Physics, he is a Full Professor of Solid Earth Geophysics at
the University of Siena. He is a Type A Research Associate at the Institute of Environmental
Geology and Geoengineering of the National Research Council (CNR).
Throughout his career, he has been part of the working groups that developed and progressively
updated the Guidelines and Criteria for Seismic Microzonation. From 2011 to 2014, he served on
the national committee for the Evaluation of Research Quality (VQR) in Earth Sciences. From 2013
to 2015, he directed the National Research Project (DPC-INGV) on short-term earthquake
forecasting. Between 2017 and 2022, he was President of the Center for Seismic Microzonation and
Applications, established at the CNR. From 2017 to 2023, he was a member of the National
Commission for Major Risks under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and served as a
consultant to the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for seismic site characterization of
nuclear facilities. He has coordinated numerous Seismic Microzonation studies in Central Italy and
Tuscany and co-led scientific coordination missions within NATO – Science for Peace projects,
aimed at developing scientific cooperation in crisis areas. For more than 10 years, he coordinated
the technical committee of the Marche Region for Seismic Microzonation studies.
Currently, he is the President of the Committee for Geological Sciences degrees at the University of
Siena and coordinates the Nationally Relevant Research Project (PRIN) focused on seismic
characterization of the territory for spatial planning and seismic risk reduction. He has carried out
extensive professional training activities on behalf of the National Council of Geologists and
various Regional Orders, focusing on the application of geophysical techniques for subsurface
seismic characterization.
Throughout his scientific career, he has worked on quantitative modeling of geodynamic processes
using analytical and numerical models, determination of stress and strain fields from geodetic and
seismic data, reservoir-induced seismicity, deformation processes in geothermal areas, mud volcano
dynamics, and the development of models for regional-scale seismic hazard assessment using
probabilistic approaches. He has also studied pre- and co-seismic phenomena associated with
RADON emissions and deep piezometric data. In recent years, his research has primarily focused
on defining and applying experimental and numerical procedures for seismic characterization of the
territory aimed at spatial planning and safeguarding building heritage.
He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Seismology and has authored over 280 full-
length publications (SCOPUS H-Index = 34).
1) Probabilistic estimates of seismic hazard
2) Seismic microzonation for land and emergency planning
3) Seismic characterization of the shallow subsoil with passive methods
4) Inversion of geophysical data
