Matteo Baini is an ecotoxicologist at the Department of Physical, Earth and Environmental Sciences (DSFTA) of the University of Siena. After completing his PhD in Earth, Environmental and Polar Sciences, he focused his research on the impact of emerging pollutants—particularly microplastics and marine litter—on marine organisms. He works on the development and application of innovative ecotoxicological methodologies in bioindicator species. He has contributed to the standardization of European protocols for the monitoring of marine litter and associated biological effects.
He has participated in numerous national and international research projects (LIFE, Interreg Med, PRIN, ENI CBC Med), in collaboration with several scientific institutions. He is the author of over 60 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
1. Monitoring the impact of marine litter on marine ecosystems.
2. Development and harmonisation of protocols for the study of environmental contaminants.
3. Application of integrated monitoring protocols for the assessment of multiple stresses on marine species.
4. Use of bio-indicator species for the analysis of accumulation and biochemical response to contaminants.
5. Monitoring and conservation of marine biodiversity.
