The University of Siena's Department of Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage and the Center for Geotechnologies (CGT) established the Second-Level Master's Degree in Geotechnologies for Archaeology (GTARC) in the 2005/2006 academic year.
The GTARC Master is designed for recent graduates and professionals in the archaeological sector who want to expand their skills through a specific, highly technical, and applied training that integrates technology and archaeology. In an increasingly digitalized world, archaeology needs experts who can combine traditional humanistic knowledge with advanced technological skills. This includes the use of GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, geophysics, and 2D and 3D modeling.
The program also emphasizes key aspects of legislation related to preventive archaeology, with a particular focus on using GIS to manage archaeological risk. Given the current economic climate, archaeologists can't rely solely on their basic training. To be competitive in the job market, they must specialize by learning and applying innovative technologies.
