Zoologist specialized in terrestrial and freshwater molluscs, he studies systematics and phylogeny with an integrated approach between morphology and genetics. He has described new taxa, reported alien species and compiled faunal lists. As an expert on molluscs, he has collaborated with some research groups for studies on the climatic history and environmental context of prehistoric populations. Active in the conservation and management of biodiversity in Tuscany, he edited the Atlases of amphibians, reptiles and fish of the province of Siena. Since 2013 he has been director of the Natural History Museum of the Accademia dei Fisiocritici and, since 2019, president of the same Academy, promoting research on the collections and the enhancement of the museum heritage.

MAIN SCIENTIFIC INTEREST

1. Taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, paleontology, and biogeography of terrestrial and freshwater molluscs in the Euro- Mediterranean area.
2. Checklist of non-marine mollusc faunas, with a particular focus on alien species.
3. Study of diversity patterns and ecology of terrestrial and freshwater malacocoenoses, both in natural environments (e.g., forest habitats) and anthropized environments (e.g., urban areas).
4. Assessment and monitoring of terrestrial and freshwater mollusc taxa of particular ecological, biogeographical, and/or conservation interest, for the enhancement and protection of habitats and biodiversity.
5. Study and valorisation of natural history museum collections, with particular reference to those of the Natural History Museum of the Accademia dei Fisiocritici in Siena, one of the oldest scientific institutions in Italy.
