Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics awarded to LHC Collaborations: Siena’s contribution also recognized
Cern

On April 5, 2025, the international collaborations ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN were awarded the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation for the outstanding scientific achievements based on data collected during LHC’s Run-2.

The prize was awarded for:

“The detailed measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson that confirm the mechanism underlying mass generation, the discovery of new strongly interacting particles, the study of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry, and the exploration of nature at the smallest distances and highest energies made accessible by the CERN LHC.”

This prestigious award highlights how the LHC experiments have pushed the boundaries of fundamental physics further than ever before.

The University of Siena is proud to have contributed to this success through the work of researchers and PhD students from the Department of Physical, Earth and Environmental Sciences, who are actively involved in the international ATLAS and CMS collaborations as members of the CMS and ATLAS groups of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), Sez. Pisa. These groups include researchers from the INFN Sez. Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, the University of Pisa, and the University of Siena.
