"Study of light-induced atom desorption using surface scientific techniques"

Abstract
Light-induced atom desorption in alkali vapor cells was first discovered by an Italian group in 1993 with a coated Na vapor cell. Since then, similar desorption phenomena have been observed for various types of cell surfaces, and actually used in practice as a quick and efficient atomic loading method in atomic spectroscopy and laser cooling experiments.
The physics of the desorption mechanism itself is, however, still not clear, partly due to the lack of studies based on surface scientific methods. We are currently investigating alkali atom desorption form quartz and pyrex glass surfaces characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Experimental results on the relation between surface conditions and desorption properties will be presented.
