L'articolo scientifico "Release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals from rubber crumb in synthetic turf fields: preliminary hazard assessment for athletes" pubblicato da Letizia Marsili ed altri colleghi del Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche della Terra e dell'Ambiente e dell'Università di Siena nel 2014 nella rivista internazionale "Journal of Environmental and Analytical Toxicology", è stato utilizzato per la literature review di uno studio nazionale intrapreso da U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry da EPA Agenzia Govermativa Americana, sui granuli macinati da pneumatici nei campi artificiali. In particolare riportano:
" Marsili et al. (2014) found that the hazard indices and cumulative excess risk values for cancer were all below levels of concern for measured chemicals; however, based on laboratory tests of PAH 5 releases at 60° C, estimated air concentrations at fields under hot conditions, and assuming long-term frequent exposures at the high temperature, they concluded cumulative PAH exposures under high heat conditions may be of concern".
